Thuja plicata Excelsa , or Excelsa Arborvitae, are similar to Green Giant Arborvitae and are also part of the Western Arborvitae family. Excelsa Arborvitae are extremely cold-hardy and show excellent deer-resistance, both of which make them an excellent choice as screening plantings on Long Island. Excelsa Arborvitae are moderately fast-growers and can be planted and pruned as a hedge. They have a more upright shape than the Green Giant s pyramidal shape.
Note from owner: “I can safely say that Excelsa Arborvitae are more deer resistant than Green Giant. I have both planted at my house and the deer literally walk past the Excelsa to go munch on the Green Giants. The Excelsa keep a beautiful form and are my preferred choice after seeing the results this past winter. They were never touched by deer, yet my Green Giants were browsed significantly.”
